What are you all using for timers to time your practices?

It's a tricky thing. Mechanical egg timers tick (distracting) and
ring LOUDLY. Digital ones
don't tick, but also ring loudly, plus they ring continuously until
stopped (and I'd rather
not fidget with gizmos). Also, unless you've got a fancy one, you'll
have to reset the timer
after spinal breathing to time the mediation. That's a pain.

Here's the solution I found. There are freeware computer programs
that can time
multiple events, and chime only once per event (and of course your
computer's volume is
adjustable). If you practice anywhere the computer, or own a laptop,
you're all set. If you
practice in a room away from the computer, setting the computer on
full volume will
probably work fine (and if you choose a short duration alarm sound,
you won't disturb
others).

I'm a Mac user, and I use FOB (<http://www.version
tracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/
18024>). Since I'm currently doing 10 mins spinal breathing and 20
minutes meditation, I set it like this:

alarm 1: 11 minues (an extra minute for me to go sit down)
alarm 2: 32 minutes (rings 20 minutes after spinal breathing,
including a minute of rest
between).

If anyone is using a PC equivalent, please post the URL!

Hmm, I see Yogani recommends just letting your body naturally find the time duration. I'd
missed that lesson the first time. On the other hand, I can get pretty out of it, and it I'm
not going to overdo it, it can't hurt to have a gentle chime going somewhere...

Yeah yogani recommends against the timers. It is not a good idea to
go by timers and they can be very disturbing especially at the end
of meditation where we might be deep in our silence.

And also the amount of time you do need not be exactly fixed. It can
go 5 +/- minutes. Especially because all your days need not be the
same, depending on the stress levels etc... Just go with your
natural inner clock.

For Pranayama I peak at my watch from time to time. For meditation I use the old fasioned method. Beads. I know that Yogani doesn't recommend them but they are a traditional method and still work as a counting device. That and the fingers on the beads helps with any litle restlesness that comes up.

The watch thing would kill me. My meditation would very quickly become all about not
looking at the watch!

I think I'll do a compromise. I'll make my computer chime on the softest setting possible
for a couple weeks, then, once I feel like I've internalized the length of time, just wing it.

Meanwhile, I'm grateful for the timer computer programmer. An egg timer's way too loud
and jarring, and, again, peaking at a watch would make me insane.

As for beads, do you use them throughout the day, Victor?

    Jim,

In the past I have used a digital timer and made it quieter by
dulling the speaker somehow; I think I partially covered it with
that sticky stuff you can hang posters up with. I got over the
problem of not wanting to do separate time settings by having a
second timer; I had a digital watch with a countdown timer.

Sometimes I do use the beads throughout the day though Yogani advises against it. Yogani prefers to use the mantra while doing meditation and not other times. Sometimes when I am driving I am inclined to do mantra but it does make me a little less alert I think.

yes, I don't fully understand Yogani's approach to mantra; the usual goal is to become one
with the mantra, i.e. have it be unceasing. Yogani's got another approach, and I have no
doubt it's based in proven practical experience, so I'm following it. But it definitely isn't
conventional!
