I have been looking for an answer to this question for a long time. But not much gurus/books talk about it. Some give only some clues.
I have done some simple Hatha yoga practices like surya namaskar, lotus pose, etc. I have always felt a sudden joy when practicing them.
But I have noticed that it makes me numb (emotionless). idk if it just me or what. May be its because of not doing a proper meditation practice.
Anyway, I would like to know the reason for doing Hatha yoga apart from physical benefits.

Great question,
Yoga takes you inside, it makes you aware of how you feel.
You will learn to observe yourself, you will cultivate inner silence,
so that you are not a play ball of your thoughts and emotions.
Better said you will notice that you are more than your thoughts and emotions,
if you cultivated inner silence.
With inner silence you will have a choice, to react from emotions,
or to stay close to yourself and act from silence
There is a difference
To learn to know the difference we will have to practice
These days many people start with hatha yoga
It prepares the body to learn to sit without pain
and we cultivate body and meditative awareness
Then we can practice meditation
The core of the practice of yoga has to be meditation
Because that is how we cultivate inner silence
Yoga has so many many benefits,
It takes you to the next level You
we will develop
Self-Confidence, Self-Awareness, Self-Love, Loving relationships, Inner Strength, Balance, Non-Attachment, Wisdom, Contentment and many more.....like the Joy you noticed, or prefering healthy foods.
Of-course this will take time, yoga is a process,
It leads one from doing .....to being.
