Lesson 233 - Yoga and Religious Beliefs  (Audio)

From: Yogani
Date: Sun Sep 5, 2004 0:13pm

New Visitors: It is recommended you read from the beginning of the web archive, as previous lessons are prerequisite to this one. The first lesson is, "Why This Discussion?"

Q: Thank you for all the lessons.

I already completed the lessons, and am progressing with 2 times daily practise. But if I have a shortage of time, then I only do pranayama and meditation.

I have a question. Is it OK to practice AYP without interfering with our faith? Practicing AYP is like practicing tennis or playing chess. It is only a matter of physical body including brain and nervous system.

A: Your practice sounds very good.

Yes, that is right. Yoga is a matter of purifying and opening the nervous system to its natural higher functioning, which will not interfere with any religious belief system. AYP is non-sectarian, meaning, not tied to any particular belief system.

Interestingly, as our nervous system purifies and opens we become much more attuned to inner Truth, and that can strengthen our spiritual life in whatever religious tradition we are in. Each religious tradition has its own terminology and metaphorical language to describe the process of human spiritual transformation, which is the same neuro-biological process in everyone.

And if we are not involved in any religious belief system, that is okay too. Yoga will work just as well in the nervous system, as long as we have a strong desire to practice and progress toward greater inner peace and happiness.

The guru is in you.
